Safety valve- safety first

Components of a steam boiler plant and their function

Safety valves are safety devices that prevent the permissible operating pressure from being exceeded in all pressurized systems.

To make this easier to understand, let’s take a steam pressure of 10 bar in a boiler as an example. This is controlled automatically. If the steam pressure is too low, more combustion air and fuel is supplied. If the pressure rises, the fuel and combustion air supply is reduced. If a process malfunction occurs and the automatic steam quantity control reacts too slowly or fails, the pressure in the boiler increases. It is prescribed that the pressure in the boiler must never rise higher than 10% above the maximum permissible operating pressure. Are therefore in the boiler >10 bar operating pressure is reached, the safety valve is triggered abruptly to release steam. This prevents the steam boiler from being damaged.

Other areas of application for safety valves are: Hot water boilers, feed water vessels, pressure reducing sections, heat exchangers or high pressure condensate vessels.
